Ten quick questions on plant nutrition. Listen, think, then check your answer.
Question one. What is the word equation for photosynthesis? A, carbon dioxide plus water makes glucose plus oxygen. B, glucose plus oxygen makes carbon dioxide plus water. Or C, glucose plus water makes carbon dioxide plus oxygen.
The answer is A. Plants make glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water, using light and chlorophyll.
Question two. Which substance absorbs the light for photosynthesis? A, chlorophyll. B, xylem. Or C, starch.
The answer is A, chlorophyll. It is the green pigment, and it changes light energy into chemical energy.
Question three. What are nitrate ions used for? A, to make amino acids. B, to make chlorophyll. Or C, to make starch.
The answer is A. Nitrate gives the nitrogen for amino acids. Magnesium is used to make chlorophyll.
Question four. Which layer of the leaf has the most chloroplasts? A, the upper epidermis. B, the palisade mesophyll. Or C, the spongy mesophyll.
The answer is B. The palisade cells are tall, near the top of the leaf, and full of chloroplasts.
Question five. What do the guard cells do? A, open and close the stomata. B, take in water from the soil. Or C, make the leaf green.
The answer is A. Guard cells open and close each stoma, and gases move in and out through it.
Question six. What does the xylem carry? A, sugars away from the leaves. B, water and mineral ions up from the roots. Or C, oxygen to the cells.
The answer is B. Xylem carries water and mineral ions up. The phloem carries sugars.
Question seven. How can you show that a leaf contains starch? A, iodine turns it blue black. B, Benedict's solution turns it red. Or C, biuret turns it purple.
The answer is A. Iodine solution turns blue black with starch. The other tests are for sugar and protein.
Question eight. Soda lime is placed in a jar with a plant. Which gas does it remove? A, oxygen. B, carbon dioxide. Or C, nitrogen.
The answer is B, carbon dioxide. Without carbon dioxide, the plant cannot make starch.
Question nine. A plant cannot make enough chlorophyll, and its leaves turn yellow. Which ion is missing? A, magnesium. B, sodium. Or C, chloride.
The answer is A, magnesium. Magnesium ions are needed for chlorophyll, and less chlorophyll means less photosynthesis.
Question ten. The rate of photosynthesis stops rising when the light gets brighter. Why? A, another factor is limiting, such as carbon dioxide. B, the plant no longer needs light. Or C, the plant has died.
The answer is A. A limiting factor, such as carbon dioxide or temperature, now controls the rate.
