P1 Motion: key vocabulary
Twelve key words for IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences topic P1 (motion), with the Vietnamese meaning, how to say each word, a picture and an example. Ends with a test section, and a typing trainer on the site that also practises twelve general science words.
Practice
- P1 Motion: vocabulary trainer – Practise 24 words by typing them: the 12 words of the unit and 12 general science words (quantity, unit, formula). Questions give a definition, a sound or an example sentence; words you miss come back, words you know come back later.
Transcript
Welcome. Here are twelve key words for topic P one, motion. Listen to each word. Read the Vietnamese meaning. Then look at the picture.
Distance. Distance. Distance is how far an object has moved. It is measured in metres. Here is an example. The distance from the school to the park is 500 metres.
Speed. Speed. Speed is the distance an object travels in each unit of time. Here is an example. A speed of 5 metres per second means 5 metres every second.
Average speed. Average speed. Average speed is the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken. Here is an example. Average speed counts the time when you stopped, too.
Velocity. Velocity. Velocity is speed in a certain direction. Here is an example. A velocity of 20 metres per second north is a vector.
Acceleration. Acceleration. Acceleration is the change in velocity every second. Here is an example. The acceleration of the car is 2 metres per second squared.
Deceleration. Deceleration. Deceleration is when an object slows down. It is a negative acceleration. Here is an example. The brakes cause a deceleration of the train.
Stationary. Stationary. An object is stationary when it is not moving. Here is an example. The bus was stationary at the red light.
Gradient. Gradient. The gradient of a graph is how steep the line is: the change in y divided by the change in x. Here is an example. The gradient of a distance-time graph is the speed.
Scalar. Scalar. A scalar is a quantity that has size only. It has no direction. Here is an example. Distance and speed are both scalar quantities.
Vector. Vector. A vector is a quantity that has both size and direction. Here is an example. Velocity is a vector, so we must give its direction.
Constant. Constant. Constant means staying the same. Here is an example. At a constant speed the car covers the same distance every second.
Stopwatch. Stopwatch. A stopwatch is an instrument for measuring time. Here is an example. Use a stopwatch to time the trolley.
Now, test yourself. I will show you a picture and the Vietnamese meaning. Say the English word out loud. Then listen, to check.

More in this series
2:41Speed and velocity
How to measure distance and time, the speed formula with a worked example, average speed for a journey with a stop, and the difference between scalar speed and vector velocity. With Vietnamese subtitles. A “Check yourself” section with typed questions is below the video on the site.
2:25Motion graphs
Reading distance-time graphs (gradient is speed, a flat line is stationary) and speed-time graphs (gradient is acceleration, area is distance), with the numbers worked out on screen. With Vietnamese subtitles. A “Check yourself” section with typed questions is below the video on the site.
5:41P1 quiz: motion
Ten think-time questions on speed, average speed, scalars and vectors, distance-time graphs and speed-time graphs.
